Baroque Art

Introduction

Baroque art was roughly sits in 1600’s-1750’s. The famous artists  of Baroque style are Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, Anthony van Dyck and Bernini. Influenced by Greek Hellenic art and Renaissance  art, Baroque art was no longer focused on balance and harmony. It became more dynamic and aggressive. Figures usually have more twisted dynamic body and dramatic expression on the face. The interaction between images and viewers are enhanced a lot.  Also the content of baroque art tended to be more violence and sexual.

Form – The images lost their peace, balance and harmony. Instead, the figures are twisted, dynamic and dramatic. Especially the facial expressions are magnified.

Shape/space – The fore-shorting makes the closer figures bigger to grab viewers eyes on those gestures. Shapes are lose defined and roundness, generally created by different colors.

Line – Lines are covered by the color and shapes, there are no lines in nature so in order to be naturalistic, lines are softened and blended.

Texture – The textures of image are highly detailed. We can see every folds of each fabric. High detail textures also can indicate different material of the objects.

Color – Baroque color has changed a lot from previous art style. The main tone is dark with bright line to form high contrast. We can see the light source comes from the left and cast a high light on the arm and a shadow on the other side of the arm. On the far right side is so dark and even reached to pure dark.
